Treatment of Parents

My 13-year old spends about four hours watching television on weekdays, that includes an average of 30 minutes before going to school. On weekends, the hours go up to ten in a day.

Because of this, I've watched most shows myself (can't avoid it). I have a feedback on the stories and plots, generally, on all episodes: children don't respect their parents. In the shows like Wizards of Waverly Place, the kids treat their father and mother like their own age, like a peer they could get smart with, treating them as stupid and without respect.

I was thinking that only the profanities are missing and that's just because Disney channel is supposed to be a child-oriented station. I don't consider myself old-fashioned or from a medieval era. But if I did not talk to my parents like that when I was a teenager, then so be it. Also, one thing I never did was to make faces at them if I was scolded, even at their back.

Now, my daughter thinks this is okay just because she sees this on TV everyday. I hope the writers and directors of these shows would realize the impact of what they are modelling to children.

Same Moon, Same Sun, Same Star - Little Bill Song

Whenever I watch this episode of Little Bill from Noggin, I go through the day singing the song. This is from the episode with the title, "Same Moon, Same Sun, Same Star." The song really has great melody. Today, I wrote the lyrics because I want to sing it right.

Isn't the lyrics very cute? They apply to children as well as grown-ups. Makes parting sweet and a little easier. I really like it.

Yo Gabba Gabba Sleep Song

I like this song from Yo Gabba Gabba (Noggin) and I thought to share the lyrics here.

I sing this to my daughter every time even if it's not time to sleep. The melody sounds really nice and reminds me when I was a little girl. I don't know the name of the song but I call it Dreams.

Lazytown - Pink Hair

My husband and kid really like Lazytown.

My husband is not really into kid's show. After all, he's 50 years old. But when I left the two of them for two weeks, he took to watching children's shows with our daughter and the biggest of them was Lazytown. I was surprise they know the characters' names and even the songs.

I'm not crazy about Lazytown. If it's on, I would turn the channel. I thought my daughter didn't like it because it was "too old" for her. Then one weekend when the show was on and I started turning the channel my husband protested. He said he wanted to watch it.

I told him I don't like Lazytown. He asked me why. Out of the blue, I told him, "I just find it strange --a girl with a pink hair."

Sprout

We recently found the Sprout Channel and we have tuned in every day since. My daughter is getting tired of Noggin and the shows are getting old. It's good to meet new characters like Calliou(her new favorite aside from Elmo)and the Berenstain Bears. We also have tuned in to PBS, there are two channels on kid's shows, and aside from Sesame Street we have also watched Super Why and Curious George.

I knew Sprout Channel exists somewhere because I saw it on Preschool-On-Demand. But I'm positive our cable provider, which is Bright House, just included it recently. I reviewed the channel summary given by the cable company and channel 121 (where Sprout is)was not even there.

We have been watching Nicklodeon and Disney since my daughter's birth early last year so these new programs are a breath of fresh air.

Elmo Mania

I don't know what is all about Elmo that my 19-month old daughter is so crazy about. First, we don't really watch Sesame Street. Not until she asked about Elmo, who is the character printed on one of her blouses, a gift from her godmother. I was not a Sesame Street kid so I have really nothing to say about Elmo. We tuned in to PBS stations to catch Sesame Street and when it was not on, we turned to the Sprout on Demand. Trouble is, there is no Elmo show just by itself that my rather impatient daughter has to cry "Elmo, Elmo" through the show until it shows Elmo.

I found out from researching on the internet that Elmo is the puppet for toddlers on Sesame Street and they have the last part of the program just for Elmo. So what I do everytime my daughter asks for Elmo is just to turn the channel to Sprout on Demand and fast forward it until we get to the segment. So, there's no waiting and no crying. That works.

My daughter's favorite song for the summer is Are We There Yet? sang by Moose on the Noggin channel. I was surprised that she even sings to the song whenever it's played on Noggin (she is just 18 months old).

This is the song that Moose sings in between Noggin shows during the Halloween season. I always sing this to my daughter because it is just her favorite song even if it's not Halloween yet.

Thanks for Kids On Demand Channel

It's really wonderful that we can now watch TV programs on demand, especially kids' programs. Because of that, my daughter doesn't have to wait to watch her favorite program on TV. She can watch it whenever she wants.

The problem is, they don't change the episode that is available for viewing for more than one month. I don't know about my daughter, but I'm tired seeing the same show over and over again.

Wow Wow Wubbzy!

I can't explain my daughter's fascination with the children's show, Wow Wow Wubbzy. Of all the programs we watch for kids, Wow Wow Wubbzy is the only one that can hold her attention for as long as ten minutes.

There she would stand in the middle of the living room, in front of the television, eyes fixed on the screen, enthralled by the movements, the color, and sound of Wow Wow Wubbzy.

I personally think that Wow Wow Wubbzy is an excellent program. It is about Wubbzy or Wubster and his two friends, Widget and Walter. They live in Wuzzleburg, a town that has houses, park, library, school, and shops. The episodes tell of day to day incidences in Wubbzy's life. It teaches morals of being true to one's self, telling the truth, not giving up, and giving from the heart. It is a cute children's show.

When Wow Wow Wubbzy is not on in the regular programming of Nick Jr or Noggin, I would tune in to Kids On Demand Channel and play it for my daughter. She is just 14 months old but she sure knows what a good show is.

Oobi - Naked Puppets

Yes, that's what I call Oobi: naked puppets. I am impressed how the production can made characters out of bare hands. They did a good job putting personality to each of the hands. Very creative.

But then, I still feel a "yuck-iness" in it. I'm just glad it doesn't show during peak viewing hours. My baby woke up one night and had a rare case of screaming episode so we had to turn on the TV and go to where else but the 24-hour preschool on the TV which is the Noggin channel. Oobi was on.

I think I should have no complaints because Oobi did stopp the crying. Oh well.
